BASE Celebrates Completion of Phase 1 of New Community Center with Community Open House

Fort Atkinson, WI — Badgerland After School Enrichment (BASE) welcomed community members, families, partners, and supporters to an Open House event celebrating the completion of Phase 1 of the new BASE Community Center, marking a major milestone in the organization’s mission to expand youth and community enrichment opportunities in Fort Atkinson.

The event offered the public its first look inside the newly renovated space, an achievement made possible through years of planning, collaboration, and community investment.

“Standing in this space so many of us have dreamed about, planned for, fought for, and believed in feels extraordinary,” said Alicia Norris, Executive Director of BASE. “Construction of Phase 1 is complete, and we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of everyone who helped make this vision a reality.”

The new center will open the door to expanded enrichment programming, health and wellness activities, family engagement opportunities, and community connection. “We are just getting started,” Norris added. “This project began with a vision that every child in Fort Atkinson deserves a place where they feel safe, supported, inspired, and connected. A place where belonging isn’t just a word, but the heartbeat of everything we do.”

During the Open House, attendees were invited to explore interactive stations throughout the building, including:

  • A vision board activity in the Learning Lab, where guests shared hopes and ideas for the future of the space.

  • Card making in the Art Room, led by BASE kids.

  • Dash & Dot robotics play in the STEM Lab.

  • A Lego engineering challenge in the Tinker Lab to build a bridge over the Rock River.

  • A collaborative community art piece, inviting guests to contribute a “ray of sunshine” to the center’s first original artwork.

Board Chair Hannah Bare emphasized gratitude for the donors, partners, board members, and staff who have propelled the project forward. “You didn’t just help fund a building; you affirmed a mission. Your gifts are votes of confidence in our kids, our families, and our future.”

While Phase 1 is complete, BASE is already preparing for the next steps. Upcoming work includes outfitting classrooms, equipping the commercial kitchen, expanding programming, strengthening partnerships, and launching Phase II of construction.

“This Open House is a celebration, but it’s also a reminder of the power of staying involved and invested in our community’s future,” Norris said. “We invite everyone to help us keep this momentum moving forward, for our kids and our community.”

The BASE Community Center is expected to become a vibrant hub for learning, creativity, and connection, serving children and families across Fort Atkinson for generations to come.
